She was a ray of sunshine that lit up the room. She commanded full attention from the moment she walked in, which was usually late. She was full of energy and could lift anyone’s spirits. She didn’t need the lashes, lipstick or nails, but she wore them like nobody else!
Her name was Shelby Elizabeth Young, and on June 15, 2000, the world got a little brighter, a little bigger, and a little more boujee-er. Many knew her as Shelby Lou, Baby Girl, Fatty Patty, Shebs, but all knew her as someone easy to love. A few who loved her, who left this world first include her grandparents, Larry and Betty Thompson and her PopPop, Bert Hornaday, and a cousin, Josh Hughes.
Those who felt her love most and will miss it daily include her parents, Jack and Shelley Young and Chris and Michelle Stanfield; her brothers, Hudson Young and Aaron Lyons; and her sister, Samantha Doherty and husband, Clint; her grandparents, Dan and Judy Young, Nancy Hornaday, and Rex and Mitsie Stanfield; her extended family, Tommy, Robin, and Hunter Stringfellow, Kevin, Amber, Aubrey, Ansley and Adalyn Hornaday; Michael, Jennifer, Autumn, April and Holly Mitchell, Rusty, Betsy and Michael Hughes, Hailey, Hannah, Alexis; and her precious nieces, Jaycee and Sutton Doherty; her boyfriend, Matthew Mitchell and his daughter, Kinley.
There’s almost no doubt one of her strongest gifts was intentionally loving others. Through her nursing career, she was able to live out one of her favorite quotes, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”. God granted her the ability to live this out at Dallas County Medical Center and St. John’s Place.
At every ballgame, family event, church function, or social gathering, you could feel her love for life and her love for people.
Shelby was a daughter, sister, friend, hype-man, cheerleader, encourager and supporter, but she was never a stranger.
It might not have been the whole world that cried, but that’s simply because Shelby had yet to meet the whole world. All who knew her felt the loss on August 5, 2023. Shelby inspired many, loved by most but left her mark on all.
