James Windell Raney

Senator James Windell (Jim) Raney of Sheridan, Arkansas, was born May 8, 1934, in Dallas county in the community of Ivan, Arkansas, the son the late James Tillman "Buck" Raney and Helen Von Malcom. Senator Raney died April 14, 2010, in Sheridan at the age of 75.

Before he became ill, he was an active member of First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Sheridan. He was a 1952 graduate of Fordyce High School, a 1961 graduate of Arkansas A & M College (UA-Monticello) , and served his country during the Korean conflict as a member of the U. S. Air Force with the Airways and Air Communication Service from 1952 through 1956. He was 28 years old when he was elected to serve in the Arkansas State Senate, representing Bradley, Dallas, Cleveland, Calhoun and Grant counties from 1963 through 1967. He retired from Ideal Cement Company in 1993.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife of 40 years, Norma Jean Williams, and one of their four children, John David Raney. Both died in 1993.

Survivors include sons James Scott Raney of Mt. Home, AR, Norman Todd Raney, of Little Rock, AR, daughter Marla Lise Raney Armstrong and husband Dave Armstrong of Sheridan, AR; grandchildren, Andrew Lee (Andy) Armstrong of Little Rock, AR, James David, Alicia Jean, Samuel Dale and William Todd Raney of Mt. Home, AR; sister, Mary Wanda Trofholz of Stevenville, Texas; brother William Nuel Raney of Mabelvale, AR, wife Helen Martin of Hot Springs, AR, who he married in 2001; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will greatly miss him.


The family will receive friends Saturday from 12 until 1 p.m. at Benton Funeral Home in Fordyce.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Benton Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Jerry Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Moseley Cemetery, with Brother Richard Merritt officiating.
