Ida Lou Johnson

February 17, 1932 — August 7, 2025

LITTLE ROCK

Aunt Chuckle was known for her chocolate pies, fried chicken and pineapple cake among her extended family. To everyone else, she was Ida Lou Dunn Johnson, youngest daughter of Truitt and Adrian Dunn of Hampton, Arkansas. She was born February 17, 1932, the sixth of eight children in the family, a mere 15 months after her sister, Louise. Many who didn’t know the family well often thought the girls were twins.

Ida graduated from Hampton High School in 1950, where she played outstanding basketball, often scoring as many as 60 points on the half court that girls played on at that time. She was even recruited by one of the few women’s teams at that time, as she was 6 feet tall. Instead, she went to work for the Naval ammunition depot in the area. She spent 7 years there before she moved to Little Rock to work with the Baptist Trumpet Newsletter. Her career changed as she became the office manager for Bass Printing Company, where she remained until her retirement in 1990.

In October 1967 she married Joe B. Johnson, a native of Benton, Arkansas. They spent 57 wonderful years together, camping, going to Razorback football games and enjoying large family get togethers.

Joe preceded her in death on April 18, 2018. She was also preceded in death by her parents, as well as her 7 siblings; Horace, Joe T., Ira (Red), James, Harvey, Louise Silen, Carroll Wayne, and William Franklin, and their spouses. She is survived by one sister-in-law, Marty Dunn, widow of Carroll Wayne. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday August 12, 2025 at Faustina Methodist Church with funeral services following at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Jeremy Langley, President of Central Baptist Church presiding. Burial will be at Dunn Cemetery.
