George William Childs of Kingsland, 93, passed away Tuesday December 8, 2009 in Fordyce, Arkansas. George was born on January 12, 1916 in Kingsland, Arkansas to Fred and Louise Childs. He was the third of four sons, James Henry, Fred Travis, George William, and Ralph Horton.
George graduated from Kingsland High School in 1934 and four years later he married Lois Irene Cook, the love of his life. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II where he was assigned as Heavy Equipment Instructor at Fort Lewis in Washington state. After the war ended, he received an honorable discharge and returned to his family in Kingsland.
He was a lifelong member of Kingsland United Methodist Church, serving as Sunday School Superintendent for over 30 years. He was also a member of the Kingsland Cemetery Committee for many years. Many will remember "Mr. George" as the Rural Mail Carrier, a job which he dutifully did for more than 30 years. George enjoyed raising cattle and operating his 3-man sawmill which still stands near his home place. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. After retirement, George and Lois loved to explore flea markets searching for that perfect antique bottle to add to their collection.
His parents, his wife Lois, and all his siblings have preceded him in death. George is survived by his two sons, George H. Childs and his wife, Melba, and William (Bill) Childs and his wife, Marie; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two nephews and seven nieces.

Family Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Benton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Benton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark Rivers, Rev.
