Erna Roberta Wallingsford, age 90 of Hampton, went to be with her heavenly father on July 15, 2011. Her daughter, Frankie Sarver was with her when she died at her home in Hampton, Arkansas. Erna was preceded in death by her parents, Mack and Beryle Owens; her husband of 68 years, Franklin Benjamin Wallingsford; and her daughter, Darien Roberta Oliver. Erna is survived by a daughter, Frankie Sarver of Hampton; a granddaughter, Lori Leigh Oliver Fawbush and husband Nathan of Sherwood; three great-granddaughters, Cheyenne, Savannah, and Brooklyn of Sherwood; and one sister, Verda Owens Nowlin of Little Rock.
Erna was an accomplished and gifted musician. She was a second-generation pianist since the age of 5 and played the organ and piano for more than fifty years at her church. She also played the French horn with her family band for many years and sang with her best friend, Joanne Payne, on television in their younger days. Erna prided herself on playing the organ at weddings of at least three generations. She was humble in her talents though and often said, "When God gives you a gift, give something back and use that talent to glorify Him".
She was known for her friendliness, witty sense of humor, and crystal blue eyes. She wrote a weekly column in the newspaper and authored a book titled "Musings in a Small Town". She was a rural mail carrier for more than 30 years. She loved having a character named after her on Linda and Harry Thomason's show "Evening Shade" and found it amusing when people would ask her if she (like the character) really did kill her husband. She had deeply rooted faith in the Lord and glorified him through music. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hampton.
