Alton Jackson Doss, 96, of Fordyce, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2009. He was born to Bessie Trammell Doss and Andrew Jackson Doss on June 3, 1913.
He was preceded in death by Erma Smith Doss, his wife of 58 years and
the mother of his children. He is also preceded in death by an infant
son, A.J. Doss Jr., and granddaughter, Lori Spells. He is also preceded
in death by two sons-in-law, Rex Wylie and Clayton Worley.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters and families, Billie Worley
of DeSoto, Texas, Audrey Spells and husband, George, of Camden, Margaret
Lyon and husband, William of Fordyce and Becky Thrift and husband, Sammy
of Fordyce. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Donna Mitchell
Frisch, Lisa Spells Fields, Lana Spells Jones, Angela Wylie Cathey, Rex
Evans Wylie Jr., Jason Wooten and Rebekah Wooten Justice. Other
survivors are 12 great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
Mr. Doss was inducted into the U.S. Navy in 1944. He was stationed in
San Diego, Calif. Having worked in the timber industry for years, he
owned and operated sawmills and was a piling contractor. He and his wife
owned various businesses. After his retirement he bought and operated a
service station and also worked as a salesman for local car dealerships.
As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. His greatest joy
was taking his sons-in-law and grandchildren fishing. He will always be
remembered as a great fisherman by all who knew him. His love for his
family was evident.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Fordyce and
later attended the First Assembly of God Church of Fordyce.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday at Benton Funeral Home
in Fordyce with the Rev. B.L. Blann officiating. Burial will follow in
Prosperity Cemetery in the Herbine community.
